Proper Etiquette For Dance Class Students

In the dance world, to show respect in the dance school, there are particular rules of etiquette that need to be followed. By showing respect to their fellow dancers, they show respect to themselves as well. Taking dance lessons teaches self improvement, discipline and more importantly, work ethic in an organized environment.

Dance structure is a thing that assists in encouraging children to work hard through positive goals and reinforcement.

Here are the rules for beginners to professionals that should be followed when attending a dance school.

  • When you are on time, then you are already late. If your dance class will start at 4:00 and you show up at 4:00, then you now are considered late. It is a must for dancers to get to class at least 15 minutes before the class starts. This is essential so that the dancer can start to warm up the body and condition the mind for class.
  • Suitable attire should always be worn and regardless of the style of class, dancers should always wear tights and leotards. Wearing of cover-ups for the warm up is allowed, but it is crucial that tights and leotard be worn for the proper session to enable the teacher to see the proper body alignment of the dancer. This is to make the dancer use his placement to the best of his ability. The hair should be tied in a bun or ponytail to get it out of the face’s way.
  • Enter the class quietly all the time and find a spot on the ballet bar or floor and start preparing to the class. Entering the class talking and giggling with friends is discouraged.
  • Even if you believe that the teacher is tripping on you, always show respect at all times by saying thank you to corrections. It could be that the teacher sees a lot of potential in you and really just wants you to get better.
  • Be aware of your dance space and show respect to others.
  • Get out from the front of the room if you do not know what you are doing. It is just natural to show that you really are working hard. However, if you are not sure, transfer to the side so you will be able to see who does know how and copy from them.
  • Do not judge anyone whom you are dancing with because dance studios are non- judgemental places.
  • And finally, last but not least, you should always clap your hands after class for the teacher and say thank you.
