Starting Your Own School Of Dance

There are lots of people who want to learn to dance, whether it’s ballet, contemporary rock dancing, square dancing or ballroom. Your own preference though or the dances that are really popular in your community will ultimately dictate the kind of dance you want to highlight when you start your own school of dance.

You can start by holding classes in your own home if you have the space, if you don’t but one of your students does, give free lessons in exchange for the use of a basement or any large room. With the exemption of ballet and jazz that need  large mirrors and bars, you won’t need any props for most kinds of dance instruction. If you can’t avail of a free space, the next best thing would be your local church or YMCA. Normally, you would give a percentage of your tuition receipts in exchange for the hall. Negotiate the amount of percentage but it should never surpass 50 percent.

When setting up a class, start by writing a comprehensive and concise brochure that summarizes the complete pricing and schedule. This will be your major marketing piece, the ones that you will distribute to every single interested person. Then you can solicit inquiries by putting together small classified ads.

However, classified ads should not be the end of your promotion. If you are starting a ballet school, give your friends who have children a call and tell them about the school. You can also put up posters on the bulletin board of the nursery schools, day care centers and youth centers. Furthermore, help your advertising campaign by leaving your business cards at toy shops and children clothing stores.

The most basic of your tools in teaching will be the music player; a portable should be enough, for the moment.

You should end up with $30 to $35 an hour gross profit so figure out what your rate would be. So if you have a class of ten students, you can charge about $3.50 per student per lesson. Try to make your instruction costumers agree to a chain of lessons like one lesson per week for six to ten weeks. Of course, if you are only teaching smaller classes with a very few numbers of students, costumers will pay more, and in return, they will be getting a more personalized attention for their money.

Relatively, within a short time, you will be able to find yourself an owner of a thriving business that could generate an income of $ 25.000 a year or up.
